With over forty years of ministry experience, Marya has been actively involved in the Diocese of Massachusetts with clergy support groups, as a volunteer chaplain at the Barbara C. Harris Camp and Conference Center, and as a member of the Merrimack and North Shore Deanery. Rev. DeCarlen holds an MDiv from Episcopal Divinity School. She has two college-aged sons, Michael and Jacob, and a four-year-old rescue Labrador named Frankie.
Dr. Carl Klein
Interim Director of Music
Our new interim Director of Music, Carl Klein, is known to many of us, as he did a previous short interim at St. John’s a couple years ago. He retired from church work about five years ago, after having served in (mostly) Episcopal, and a couple of Lutheran, parishes for over 40 years. In that time, he has directed adult choirs at many levels, as well as starting two children’s choir programs; he has performed as an organ recitalist in the U.S. and England. Since 2014, his primary employment has been as a voicer, reed maker, and Director of Special Projects and Maintenance at C. B. Fisk, Inc. (the builders of our organ, which is Fisk Opus 97). In his work for the shop, Carl travels regularly, mostly within the U. S., to perform voicing, maintenance, repairs, and upgrades on the Fisk “fleet”, on both their new and old instruments.
His formal musical and scholarly training was at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY (DMA 1991; MM 1988), and before that, at Mansfield University of Pennsylvania (BM 1986). In addition to his work at Fisk, Dr. Klein is also the Librarian/Administrator at the American Guild of Organists Organ Library, in the School of Theology at Boston University. He has two grown children who both live in the Boston area.

Brianna Komi brings extensive administrative, client service, and Human Services Practitioner experience to her new role as Parish Communications & Operations Manager. A longtime Gloucester resident, she has family & community ties to St. John's Episcopal Church. She looks forward to meeting all members, and helping the church tell its evolving story of social justice, inclusion, and community
enrichment. Her Summer work schedule will be in-office Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays 8am-noon.

I waltzed into St. John’s Thrift Store for a potato masher and I came out as My Girl Friday. I have mentioned in more than one (seventeen or so) conversations that I am in the right place at exactly the right time and delighted to be here. I have the gift of gab and the ladies have to rein me in sometimes. Last thing! If you want a story I have one.
